Italy Cycling Holidays

In 2010 CTC Cyclists' Touring Club will start cooperating with a number of other member organisations of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), which means, among other things, that their members will be able to join cycling holidays organized by other ECF organisations and FIAB (Federazione Italiana Amici della Bicicletta) is happy to be among the first ones to make this exchange possible.

Therefore, FIAB invites CTC members to join them to cycle in Italy in unspoilt landscapes, to enjoy good food and drink as well as historic jewels of architecture in a friendly environment.

FIAB organises every year only few cycle-tourist national events, i.e.: the Cicloraduno (a four-day national Bicycle-Meeting) in June, the Bicistaffetta (a relay-tour in September) and a two-day Mini-Cicloraduno in Tuscany, usually also in the month of September.

Many other tours are organised by the local groups around Italy with a calendar from March/April to November.
Most local groups put their calendar on Fiab's website in March, although some are available before that time: you can see in this page in Italian this year's program.
Some groups don't put their tours on Fiab's website, but
you can visit their website.
We'll put on this page some of these events in English when the local groups consider that the tour could be attractive to cyclists from England or other countries.
It should be pointed out that FIAB is non-profit federation - not a tour operator - and organises these cycle tours on a voluntary basis. All the local guides are also volunteers who love cycling.

23th National Cicloraduno FIAB
17 - 20 June 2010

Recognized as one of the world’s most important archeological sites thanks to the remarkable state of conservation of his extraordinary Temples, the Greek city of Paestum in Campania will be from 17th to 20th June 2010 the unique scenery where the 23th National Cicloraduno FIAB will take place.
From Paestum every day the bicycle excursions will start to discover the treasures of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano that preserves, in its 181.048 hectars of protected territory, a priceless heritage, the fruit of the harmonic blend of natural scenery and architecture. Here, the succession of these millenary interactions between Nature and Culture has transformed the Cilentan area into a complex bio-geographical system in which Grecian cities and old town centres, ancient abbeys, castles, and manor houses are set into even more unspoilt environments teeming with rare flora and fauna, majestic terraced olive groves, grottoes, caves and gorgeous forests. All of this is contained within a delicately dynamic equilibrium, unique but fragile.
Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park with the Archeological sites of Paestum have been recognized as Word Heritage by UNESCO.

Bicistaffetta
FIAB’s annual relay tour to publicize Italy’s bicycle routes

Since 2001 every year FIAB in September chooses one of the 15 itineraries of BicItalia - the national network project which is part of Eurovelo - crossing Italy from north to south and from west to east- and organizes the so-called Bicistaffetta, a relay bicycle tour, to give the opportunity to its leaders and members to get to know the itineraries and to establish contacts with the administrators and the decision-makers of the cities, provinces and regions along the way, while at the same time checking the conditions of the roads and the accommodation facilities offered.
This is also often the occasion to promote the publication of guides along the BicItalia network and to convince the decision-makers of the utility of investing in bicycle tourism. Two guides have already been published by Ediciclo and are available for the Italian and foreign tourists who wish to visit our beautiful and culturally-rich peninsula using a non-polluting environmentally-friendly means of transport.
Each time a group of 50 to 70 people, including FIAB's leaders and the presidents of the local associations, take part in the relay tour, which usually consists of 6 or 7 stages at the most. Cyclists can also decide to participate to only one or two stages of the tour according to their possibilities.
The participation fees are usually low thanks to the sponsorship of some administrations. and it is half for FIAB’s executives to encourage them to take part. In the various stops the media are summoned to publicize the event. Often at the starting point and at the arrival and when making a stop in the most important cities, meetings, round tables and seminars on cycle tourism in Italy and on BicItalia proposals are organized.

After the success of the 2007 edition of Paciclica - by bike for Peace, FIAB's National Board granted the organisers the award «Amico della Bicicletta» 2008 and decided to promote this cycle-event on the national level. The crucial moment of the cycle-event for all the associations of archipelago FIAB/ECF who will join in Paciclica 2010, will be the climb all together to Perugia. The associations will have to reach by themselves Ponte San Giovanni (Perugia’s FFSS train station) the day before the Perugia-Assisi march, i.e. Saturday 15th May 2010 at 4.30 pm. Please respect this schedule as all cyclists will convene to climb together the approximately 8 Km to reach the centre of Perugia. Here the 8th meeting of the UN Peoples Assembly will take place.
Route to reach Perugia - Bicitalia: In Italy there is FIAB's bicycle network Bicitalia, which will be an integrating part of Paciclica 2010 project. Online you will find the Quaderno FIAB by Claudio Pedroni about the Bicitalia project (2Mb, PDF).
On web-page www.paciclica.it you will find all the facts about FIAB’s Paciclica 2010 edition. Each association joining the project can take advantage of a special section, where it will be possible to upload information and photos of the ride to Perugia, as well as news and comments of every association. In order of access see informations on
www.paciclica.it.
